Bushman – It was kind of a no-brainer for me to have this be the first thing I release. I wrote it about 6 months after moving here, so almost a year and a half ago now, and I’ve played it at almost every show since I’ve written it. This song means so much to me and it’s about my family, my friends, and where I’m from.
TNB – Tell us about the journey of how this song came together.
Bushman – I wrote it with my friend, Alexander Wren back in October of 2018. I am a big fan of Alex’s artistry and actually had listened to his stuff before I moved here. So I was looking forward to the write but was also still pretty new to co-writing and didn’t have an idea ready. We are both pretty internal writers, so we pretty much stared at the walls for an hour or so. Then we started talking again and he asked how I liked Nashville so far and I told him it was great, but I was also missing my family and it was going to be weird missing my brother Griffin’s birthday the next week. That’s almost word for word the first lyric and we just dug into that idea of being very conversational and vulnerable about missing home, but also knowing I am in this new place for a reason.
TNB – For this being your first release, you have an amazing amount of buzz in Nashville. Did you feel any pressure to put this out?
Bushman – Thanks for saying that, man! It is really cool to think about how much has changed since I wrote this song. I have made a lot of friends and experienced so much here. I don’t think pressure is the right word, but I’ve definitely been looking forward to having something out for a long time. To have a product that I am so proud of is so rewarding. Worth the wait. I have to thank Josh Kranich for absolutely crushing this video, and Brad Stella and Tony Moglia for engineering and mixing the audio. Couldn’t have made this without those dudes.
TNB – What can we expect over the next year?
Bushman – I will be putting out new music this year for sure. I started working on an EP at The Castle Recording Studios in November and have been really focused on that. Brad Stella is producing it, and it has been such a refreshing experience to work with him and have a group of songs that I think are really strong and feel authentic to me and my artistry 100%. Also, playing live shows. I plan on putting together some Nashville shows around the release and also touring the EP. I’m stoked to be going on tour for the first time in less than a month, supporting Daniel Donato for 5 shows across the east coast/midwest. So many things that I’m looking forward to this year and I can’t wait to share!
